Module 9: Mobile Learning
Module 9 focused on mobile learning, another type of learning environment. Mobile learning (mLearning) is not the same as electronic learning (eLearning). We discussed how mLearning is portable, personal, collaborative, interactive, contextual and situated. Based on these properties, I began my search for apps that could support a mobile learning environment. The number of apps available are countless, but not all of them would prove useful or appropriate for classroom use. After I had a list of apps to use on my flyer I explored the two digital flyer sites we were given to choose from.
Both Smore and Tackk offer the following:
-
easy to use
-
preset formats and customizable features
-
add content, edit and rearrange the elements of your flyer
-
share flyers using social media, email and links
-
free to sign up
Although they have many features in common, they are not identical. For example:
-
Smore has more limited customization features than Tackk as fonts, colors and backgrounds are limited by preset formats.
-
Smore has a click and drag feature that makes rearranging elements easy, while Tackk has an up/down arrow that limits movement to one element shifting up/down one space at a time.
-
Tackk has a wide range of content that can be added
-
Titles, text, photos, video, audio, buttons, maps, sell, forms, media (i.e. Tackk, Twitter, Slideshare, Thinglink, and other embedded links using URLs), RSVP
-
-
Smore has a different range
-
Title, text, photo, gallery, event, bio, audio, video, embedded links
-
-
Tackk offers a Stream feature that allows others to comment on your Tackk as well as add content within that comment (i.e. photos, video, audio, and links) while Smore has a simple comment feature that does not allow additional content.
-
Tackk is completely free while Smore allows for the creation of 5 flyers before users must pay to continue using the site.
Overall, I preferred Tackk. Free access and more customization makes this site more appealing. I could use this site to create content for my class or I could instruct my students to create an assignment using this site.
