Module 5: Frameworks For Using Technology in Education
Module 5 focused on the following three key aspects:
1) TPACK (Technology Pedagogy Content Knowledge) - a framework used to understand how an educator might mobilize pedagogy, and technology to better present the content, to make the content more accessible to students.
2) SAMR (Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition) - a model concerning how technology is integrated into education.
3) ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) standards - created standards for teachers, students, administrators, technology coaches and policy makers.
For this module we were asked to create our own TPACK diagrams based on where we considered our development to be in the three knowledge bases represented in TPACK. We were instructed to use Google Drawing, PowerPoint, Word, Publisher, or any other software that would enable us to complete the assignment.
I chose to use Word as I am very familiar with this program. Word is fairly easy to use and has many editing and style features that can be used to create images. I used the shapes supplied by word and then altered individual elements such as: color, line weight, line style, size and transparency. Using these features I created a circle for each of the knowledge bases and boxes for each knowledge base as well as the intersections between them. The circles have a transparency of 50% so that the intersections are visible through the layers. I made each knowledge base circle in the diagram a different color and used the same color as the border for the corresponding explanatory box. To mimic the color seen in the intersecting areas I layered separate boxes with the knowledge base colors set at the same transparency as the circles and grouped them together. I chose to create an ideal TPACK diagram as well. I strive to consider my current abilities in relation to my future goals. I think creating my ideal TPACK has been beneficial as it has pushed me to really consider areas where I am not as confident in my knowledge and how I might work to improve those areas. The image above is my current TPACK diagram, as of October 2015. I believe the TPACK Framework is a valuable tool for reflection, self-evaluation, and growth. Creating this visual representation of my knowledge bases inspired me to reflect and evaluate myself, to really contemplate how far my knowledge bases extend, how my knowledge bases interact, how I have integrated them, how I could integrate them more effectively, and how my strengths and weaknesses impact my effectiveness as an educator. Creating a personal TPACK diagram each year is a great addition to the process of reflecting and evaluating my performance as an educator so that I can determine a plan for professional development.
