Module 7: Virtual Learning Environments
Module 7 focused on how technology can enhance a learning environment or create a completely virtual learning environment. The goal of using technology in education is to provide flexible learning environments.
Types of learning environments include:
Flexible learning focusses on learning that can occur and any time, in any place and at any pace. So, flexible learning aims to extend learning beyond the boundaries of F2F learning.
Tools for flexible learning include:
-
Learning Management Systems (LMSs): Brightspace, Blackboard (Blackboard ualberta), Edmodo, Canvas, Moodle, Desire to Learn, Haiku
-
Web Conferencing: Adobe Connect, Collaborate, Join Me, Skype, Big Blue Button
-
Screencasting: Screenr, SMART Recorder, Screencast-o-matic, Camtasia
-
Course Authoring: Articulate Storyline, Lectora, Adobe Captivate, Raptivity, Camtasia
-
Open Educational Resources (OERs): OER Commons, Khan Academy, CK-12, Open Study, Open 2 Study
For this module, we were instructed to create our own LMS using Haiku. This site allows teachers to sign up and create a limited amount of content for free. The site has easy to use editing features and allows for the integration of multiple media types. For example: you can embed videos, link to other sites, upload files, create calendars and much more. I believe LMS sites can be valuable resources for teachers and students as they create a asynchronous connection to learning. Depending what kind of LMS a teacher creates, students can: access content, explore supplementary material, ask questions, discuss and more.
