Module 8: Universal Design for Learning and Assistive Technology for Learning

Module 8 focused on how teachers can use the UDL (Universal Design for Learning) framework to aid in designing flexible learning environments that support a diverse student population. ATL (Assistive Technology for Learning) are tools that support students with learning challenges. Both UDL and ATL can be beneficial to all learners.

For this module we were instructed to create an eBook concerning at least three examples Web 2.0 tools that could be used in the classroom. A summary of the tool, possible classroom applications and any limiting Terms of Use listed on the tools site were to be included in the eBook. We were instructed to use ePub Bud or Papyrus to create the eBook.

I chose to use Papyrus as it seemed fairly easy to use, with different editing features and the ability to insert images from a variety of sources. Papyrus also has a selection of templates to choose from if you do not want to create your format from scratch. I chose to start from a template and edit multiple components as I created my eBook.

Below I have embeded my eBook as it appears on Papyrus.

EBooks could have a wide range of applications in the classroom. Teachers could create eBooks containing important concepts and make them accessible to students, providing Multiple Means of Representation. These books can include different features such as text-to-speech, guides and other interactive features that serve to support student learning. Students could create eBooks to display their knowledge. Existing eBooks may contain useful information that could be accessed in addition to other class resources. A variety of texts may be available in eBook formats, so students could read an eBook instead of a print copy, increasing access to the text in some cases or adding supporting features in other cases.
